The deformation associated with the fault rupture in August 2021 appeared along the Enriquillo-Plantain Garden (EPG) fault, just as same as the earthquake that struck Haiti in 2010. Some studies suggested that the earthquake in 2010 did not rupture the EPG fault but another blind fault (Calais et al., 2010; Hashimoto et al., 2011). Similar to the 2010 quake, the deformation due to the August 2021 quake was more prominent on the northern side of the EPG fault, implying a similar transpressional fault rupture (left-lateral strike-slip and reverse slip on a northward-dipping fault plane) as the 2010 quake. This inference is consistent with the moment tensor solution by USGS.

The rupture length for the 2021 quake seems to be around 60 km. The western end of it corresponds to a kink in the active fault trace. Although the dominant rupture seems to be transpressional, we can observe a pattern typical for left-lateral strike-slip rupture around 73.9 deg. west longitude, indicating a complex rupture process.

There lies a segment of 40 to 50 km between the rupture extents of the 2010 and 2021 quakes. This “un-ruptured” segment can be considered to host a future earthquake, as pointed out by Stein et al., 2021.
